If you are presenting, and find that you are always running out of time to practice because you keep wanting to change the content, try doing a dry run with an audio recorder (or video recorder) on - no matter what shape the content is in. I find that the sooner I do a recorded dry run, the sooner my thoughts tend to focus on what's important. It also makes me concentrate on writing "speakable" phrases.
I still end up bailing out of the recording many times before I have a reasonable recording. But I find that it gets me much closer to being ready to present at an early stage, which leads to less "pressure" to remember certain points I want to add at the last minute. Then, if some emergency comes up within the last day before a presentation, I'm at least confident that I know the main points I want to talk about, and have already practiced many of the lines several times.
Another benefit is that I get to know how much content I can add, and what I will have to sacrifice if I decide to add content at the last minute.
Even though I may never listen to the recordings I make, it does something in my mind to "make it real" during practice runs. Otherwise, I find that I stop myself too easily and never force myself to complete a complex thought.
Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. |
